I've been gone for a minute, with the holidays and everything. Funny--I came back and there are some buggy things going on with mikeshinoda.com's comments, RSS, and backend. Sorry if it's messing things up for you--I'm working on some fixes soon.
Among other things, I got a Nord Electro 3 for Christmas. I can't wait to start using it...we're moving on from the last batch of songs (5) to a new batch. I don't know what songs will be in the new batch. We have about 15 contenders, with some brand new gems that I worked on with Chester and Brad. The first LP studio meeting of 2010 is next Monday, so we'll vote on it then.
On another note, I hope you're getting your New Year's Eve plans together. I never really make plans, and I end up doing whatever comes up, last minute. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not...but once again, I have no idea what I'll be up to.
With the recent release of the fan club-only rarities compilation LPU9: Demos and a Grammy nomination for best Hard Rock Performance for "What I've Done," from their live album, Revolution: Live at Milton Keynes, the decade is drawing to a close nicely for Linkin Park.
Which is to say the '00s are ending as positively as they began for the California sextet, whose 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, ranked as the seventh-best selling album of the decade. "It's been an absolutely unbelievable ten years," says Mike Shinoda, the band's resident rapper and sonic mastermind. "But I'm even more excited to find out what the future has to offer."
The near-future will see the release of an as-yet-untitled new Linkin Park album and, hopefully, some other guerilla-style goodies. Speaking on the phone from his home in L.A., Shinoda filled us in on the band's recent projects, what to expect from the new album, and his own holiday plans.
Did going back and listening to your demos for the LPU9 album reveal anything to you about the way the band works? So we've got all this stuff on hard drives that we occasionally reference for ideas, but as time went on we realized that we like making new sounds more than listening to our old ones. So we decided that if we weren't going to mine this older material, we should put it out.
Excellent. Now what about my original question? Anything to that? [Laughs] Yeah! Sorry I went off on a bit of a tangent there. You definitely pick stuff up when you go back and listen to older material. There were situations, for example, when I listened to the demos and realized that I loved playing with my MPC sampler -- it had a sound that I liked a lot that the samplers I was using on the new record didn't have. So I ended up using that again.
Tell us about the new album. Well, Rick Rubin is producing it. I'd say we're about halfway done. I'm really happy with what we have so far. We're having a ton of fun in the studio. We really want to do something special and unique for the next record -- we want to redefine the band. I feel like on Hybrid Theory we wanted to introduce ourselves to the world with a certain sound. Then on [2003's] Meteora we were trying to show that we weren't a fluke and we could do the sound that made us successful a second time. By the time we got to [2007's] Minutes to Midnight, we wanted to break down that sound and go outside its confines. Now that we've done that, we feel like we can do anything.
Can you describe any of the songs? That would be really hard for me to do. I have a tough time doing that. But I can say that it sounds brand new. The thing is, there are so many different ways to make music these days with virtual instruments, software applications, physical instruments, and computer programs. Then when you get in the position of being able to use almost any of it -- that's what we did on Minutes to Midnight . We wanted to play with as many instruments and sounds as we could. But on the new record, now that we have a sense of everything that's available to us, we can reel it in a bit and focus on just the things that we like, which so far is turning out to mean music that is more beat-driven and has a keyboard and drum machine kind of feel.
Have you picked a name for it yet? Way too early for that.
Did Chester's going off and working with [solo project] Dead By Sunrise have any residual affect on how he's now contributing to Linkin Park? That's a good question. I related to where Chester was at when he was making the Dead By Sunrise record. I went through the same thing with [Shinoda's side-project] Fort Minor. He had songs that he had to get out of his system; songs that the rest of the guys in Linkin Park couldn't necessarily get behind. Not because they wouldn't like them, but because they aren't right for a Linkin Park record. I think for both of us, working outside the band made us feel like we could focus better when we eventually came back.
Aside from the album, what do you guys have planned for the future? We really wanted to start a phase in our career where we could release music more often rather than have to wait to put out a new album every four years. The demo album is sort of representative of that. But we also wrote "New Divide" for the Transformers movie. Chester put out his Dead By Sunrise record. We're working on the new album, so things are already moving along nicely. We're really trying hard to give fans the opportunity to hear new material from us more often. It's just a matter of finding the right outlets. Hopefully, those outlets aren't always in the form of albums.
What's going on with you for the holidays? Any big plans? Usually I spend my holidays with my family. My parents still treat Christmas like I'm thirteen years old. It's super traditional. I write out a Christmas list beforehand, we eat turkey and drink hot cider. It's pretty funny.
What'd you put on your Christmas list? That part's pretty tough! I can't ask my parents to buy me a mixing board or a Neve console. So I end up asking for a nice sweater. That's more their speed.
Alternative Addiction menginterview Ryan dan sempat membicarakan tentang DBS.
"A touring schedule has not yet been announced but, Shuck said they band could hit the road in February and for those who are wondering if this will be a one-record wonder, forget about it."
“We’re already working on material for our next record,” Shuck said.
"I think that the kind of music that we're making, the sounds that we're going for -- I mean, you know, we're playing instruments through pedals that are being then sampled into keyboards and playing those through effects, and running loops and, like, there's so much craziness happening in the studio right now. Some of the beats are super-complicated, the programming is insane, and it's fun."

OC Register:
Perhaps the revolving stage might spin Linkin Park into view for a stripped-down acoustic mini-set? After all, that band’s frontman Chester Bennington was already on hand with his new outfit Dead by Sunrise. But Dead by Sunrise was a small revelation, dramatically improved since its unveiling at Epicenter at August. What then sounded like Linkin Park without the hip-hop or synth effects now comes across like a fired-up garage-rock group trying to prove its worth. Kudos, too, to Chester: when faced with a half-empty amphitheater, probably for the first time since the early days of Linkin Park, he didn’t turn prima donna, instead hurling himself into the performance and giving his all. - Selengkapnya
LA Times:
Dead by Sunrise, the new act from Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, eschewed that act's arena-sized rap-rock for a street-level scruffiness that, though typically hook-centric, wasn't nearly as fully formed as Linkin Park. But even Bennington's B-list songwriting would have been preferable to the relentless dirge of Three Days Grace, a sallow Canadian band whose set suggested that not even single-payer healthcare could heal the wounds it inflicted on those who like rock with rhythm or sex appeal. - Selengkapnya
Song: "New Divide" Performed by: Linkin Park Written by: Joe Hahn, Brad Delson & Mike Shinoda Oscar pedigree: None Key lyric: "Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between/Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide." Context: Plays over end titles and is interwoven into the score. In their words: "I was drawn to the idea that the main character, Sam, was on the verge of a massive change in his life; he had to make decisions about who he was going to be. Like many people, I can remember being in that same place," says Shinoda.
Dalam bahasa Indonesia (maaf jika translation-nya agak kurang benar):
Lagu: "New Divide" Oleh: Linkin Park Ditulis oleh: Joe Hahn, Brad Delson & Mike Shinoda Silsilah/Sejarah Oscar: Tidak Ada Lirik kunci: "Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between/Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide."
Linkin Park menduduki peringkat kedua berkat "In The End"-nya. Kita patut bangga, karena "In The End" hanyalah 1 dari seabreg lagu bergenre Alternative yang pernah dirilis. Bayangkan saja. Dari tahun 2000 sampai sekarang.
1) 30 Seconds to Mars: 'The Kill' (2006) 2) Linkin Park: 'In the End' (2001) 3) Puddle of Mudd: 'Blurry' (2001) 4) Incubus: 'Nice to Know You' (2002) 5) Seether: 'Fine Again' (2003) 6) Staind: 'It's Been Awhile' 7) Jimmy Eat World: 'The Middle' (2002) 8) Three Days Grace: 'I Hate Everything About You' 9) Evanescence: 'Bring Me to Life' (2003) 10) The White Stripes: 'Seven Nation Army' (2003)
"You can't talk about the top alternative songs of the decade without mentioning Mike Shinoda (keyboardist/rhythm guitarist) and lead singer Chester Bennington's collaborations -- Shinoda rhythmic delivery is spot on with Benningston's powerful and emotional singing. 'In the End' is probably the duo's most recognized performance (as well as 'Runaway' and 'Crawling'), as they sing about a person who has lost faith in a relationship -- whether it be romantic or friendly: "What it meant to me / will eventually be a memory / of a time when I tried so hard / And got so far / But in the end It doesn't even matter.""
Like A Hole (Featuring Chester Bennington)'.
Fire? Single Dead By Sunrise selanjutnya? (Fire was originally released in September).
Hope you?re well! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us; it means more to me than I can say. My question is: how do you cope with pressure to swim with the current when all you want to do is swim against it and how do you stay...
pegasusrocks says to (12:43): Hey All - Mike has dibs on green! Please be sure to pick a different color we all can read :)
mshinoda says to (12:43): I learned to swim when I was little. Diving too.
darknessovrme says to (12:44): only W can post
williamlp says to mshinoda (12:44): Hey mike, thank you for making awesome music and art... Will the new album consist of any music that we definatly would not expect from you guys??
mshinoda says to (12:44): Thanks
walkdifferent says to (12:44): Good afternoon Mike, what moments in your life have helped confirm some of your strongest held beliefs? Thank you.
pegasusrocks says to (12:45): Please do not post out of turn. Wait for your letter/number to be called. Your turn is based on the FIRST letter/number of your user name.
darknessovrme says to (12:45): We are on letter W folks do not post out of turn
mshinoda says to (12:45): The new stuff is pretty unusual so far. You'll have to hear it to understand. Different sounds (guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, etc), and new approaches to writing the songs
darknessovrme says to (12:45): X have your questions ready
pegasusrocks says to (12:46): X's get ready - do not post yet.
darknessovrme says to (12:46): do not post out of turn

Xris24 says to (12:46): Hey mike! based on what criteria do you guys decide on which countries you are going to perform?
mshinoda says to (12:47): defining moments: I suppose going to college, my first job (packing fruit and vegetables in a produce warehouse), and writing and recording Hybrid Theory and Minutes To Midnight.
XxbrokenangelxX says to (12:47): Hey Mike! When it comes to musical influnces are there any artists out now that catch your attention? if so would you like to work with them? Lots of Love from India
xCaboose117x says to (12:47): Mike, I just wanna say the singing you did on Fear and The Little Things Give Youy Away (Demo) was amazing. Heres my question. Across the Line seems to be very popular with the fanbase. Even though it did not make the Minutes to Midnight album, any chance
xCaboose117x says to (12:47): that it will be played live one day?
mshinoda says to (12:48): We decide where to tour based on a lot of things. I don't know all of them off hand, but obviously the size of the crowd (draw) and the impact of the show in its location rank pretty high.
darknessovrme says to (12:48): do not post out of turn ppl
darknessovrme says to (12:48): we are on X. only X can post

darknessovrme says to (12:50): Y and Z post
mshinoda says to (12:50): let Caboose finish their questions please...
zackj2245 says to (12:50): Mike do you think there will be more of your vocals on the new album?
mshinoda says to (12:50): nevermind, just saw it.
mshinoda says to (12:51): I don't have any idea if it will be played live. It will have to compete for a setlist spot vs. all our singles and the song from the new album though...
mshinoda says to (12:52): More of my vocals on new album: I have no idea. Sorry!
zara19 says to (12:52): Hi Mike, on the songs that you've completed for the album do you rap on them or does Chester take the lead vocals? Thanks for chatting with us, Zara from the Mike Shinoda Clan
pegasusrocks says to (12:52): PLEASE do not post out of turn. Your question will NOT be passed.
pegasusrocks says to (12:52): Letters Y and Z are allowed to post.
zuf says to (12:53): Hi mike, why didn't you put across the line
in mtm? it's a great song in my opinion
mshinoda says to (12:53): We're working on 5 songs in particular right now. One has a lot of rapping. Chester and I sing back and forth on one. We sing together on one, and he sings the other two.
darknessovrme says to (12:53): numbers and symbols and A get ready
mshinoda says to (12:53): Oops, I suppose we sing together on two. He sings one alone.
mshinoda says to (12:53): That's just 5 songs, though!
mshinoda says to (12:54): Across the Line just baaarely missed the cut. If there were 12 songs, I think it was #13.
darknessovrme says to (12:54): numbers, symbols, and letter A post and only those post
mshinoda says to (12:54): Do you guys want to know a few secrets?
mshinoda says to (12:54): LOL
linkinjess says to (12:54): yes :)
pegasusrocks says to (12:54): Secrets? YES
1rolphb says to mshinoda (12:55): MIke, Do You Have A Release Date Or Title For The New CD?
4Phil says to (12:55): What with the hugely positive response to the LPU9 album, do you think that demos etc will be the direction of future editions instead of the live stuff of recent years? Also did Digidesign ever get back to you?
mshinoda says to (12:55): You know about the iPhone game we're doing, right?
darknessovrme says to (12:55): do not post out of turn ppl
pegasusrocks says to (12:55): Yes.........
mshinoda says to (12:55): The game is for the iPhone and iPod touch. The story is this:

Aditya_the_warrior_within says to XxbrokenangelxX (12:56): hey Mike ! Aditya here from India. can you tell us more about the origin of 'Across The Line'. also will the new record coming out next year will have a 'making of ___' dvd with it? thanks a lot for chatting with us !!
mshinoda says to (12:56): The game takes place in a world that used to be all "low resolution." 8-bit and lower...
darknessovrme says to (12:57): do not post out of turn folks wait for me to call your letter
darknessovrme says to (12:57): B post
mshinoda says to (12:57): Then an evil corporation arrived, and they've brainwashed everyone to buy higher resolution. They are called PixxelKorp. A small rebellion has begun, to fight against PixxelKorp. You (the player) may be our only hope to combat the evil!
mshinoda says to (12:58): As you get through the game,
pegasusrocks says to (12:58): Please only post if your USERNAME begins with the letter "B"
br0wnst3r says to (12:58): Hey Mike, do you think you'll ever make a follow-up record with Fort Minor?
BlackChester says to mshinoda (12:59): Hey Mike, first of all, your new DCs featuring Joe feel great. Will you be at some european festivals next year? MLK.com just declined, that you'll be at Rock am Ring. Greets from bc.de j-k.de and LPR.net (we met in berlin last year)
mshinoda says to (12:59): It's laid out like an RPG style game, but it's got a strong social community aspect. You can talk to all your friends playing, and play together. You solve various missions to fight PixxelKorp.
mshinoda says to (12:59): If you finish the whole 1st mission, you get something AWESOME.
darknessovrme says to (12:59): do not post out of turn folks
mshinoda says to (13:00): (I'll answer some more questions now)
darknessovrme says to (13:00): lmao
mshinoda says to (13:00): Release date for new album: asap!
mshinoda says to (13:00): 2010, as soon as it's done.
mshinoda says to (13:01): Across The Line was in progress around the same time as most of the songs from MTM. No More Sorrow, LOATR, LTGYA, etc.
darknessovrme says to (13:01): do not post your question more than 1 time
darknessovrme says to (13:01): and wait for his response
darknessovrme says to (13:01): he is catching up
mshinoda says to (13:01): Fort Minor music: I'm trying to channel that stuff into the new LP album.
darknessovrme says to (13:02): C post your question 1 time and 1 time only
pegasusrocks says to (13:02): Welcome to the first chat of LPU9. Please be patient. Do NOT post until it is your turn. Make sure to pick a color we all can read, and avoid green since Mike is using it. Thanks!
mshinoda says to (13:03): European festivals (performances) - nothing scheduled yet. If anyone is saying we're confirmed on a bill...we're not. LinkinPark.com will always be the most reliable source for that info.
colinlpu says to darknessovrme (13:03): Q: Hi Mike. Out of any demos you, or the rest of the band have made, have you ever felt it should have been progressed more before being either voted out or at the time you felt it wasn't "your sound"?
mshinoda says to (13:03): OK...
cavpollo says to (13:03): If you could tweak a LP song little bit to give it a fresh new 'look'(like Reanimation, gr8 album btw), which one would u pick?(and what would be the change?) [btw, tanx 4 signin' my LPST price =P, hopefully will see u someday on Guatemala. Keep up the goo
Chemist999 says to Diosce (13:04): Hello, Mike. Are you working on the artwork to the next album during the recording process, or do you leave it until the album is finished?
mshinoda says to (13:04): Are you saying did any demos "make the cut" that I didn't like? Not really. For the most part, it's just a matter of liking it at the time. Some songs I liked more when we wrote them than I do now, but you can only do your best :)
darknessovrme says to (13:04): do not post out of turn folks
darknessovrme says to (13:05): everyone needs to calm down and wait for your turn
darknessovrme says to (13:05): we are on C only
mshinoda says to (13:05): Remixing: I liked "remixing" Points Of Authority and "Lying From You" for our live show. We try to take some of our older songs and make them a little more fresh, for the concert, sometimes.
pegasusrocks says to (13:05): Only users with the letter C as the first letter of their USERNAME can post now. Please be patient and wait for your letter/number to be called.
darknessovrme says to (13:06): D post your questions
mshinoda says to (13:06): The artwork for the new album is already in progress. It's going to be the best artwork we've had yet.
Dirudown says to Hahninator (13:06): Hey Mike, What can we expect with the new site layouts for mikeshinoda.com and linkinpark.com? greetings from switzerland BTWv (lplive.net)
pegasusrocks says to (13:06): Please only ask your question ONCE when it is your turn. Thanks.
mshinoda says to (13:07): We're moving linkinpark.com to the Ning network, and mikeshinoda.com is moving to wordpress. That doesn't affect the "look" a ton, but it's just to say that we're trying to make our network a little more
DrBiggy says to (13:07): Have You ever thought of playing old stuff from the HTEP like High Voltage, And One and so on live again? Greets from lplive.net
mshinoda says to (13:07): ...easy to connect to from/with other places on the web
Dasha says to (13:08): Hi, Mike, you already worked with Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, John Legend and many others talented artists. Can we expect new another collaborations in the near future, and whom would you like to work with? Greetings from Ukraine(})
darknessovrme says to (13:08): do not post your question more than 1 time folks
mshinoda says to (13:08): HTEP - some of the guys don't really love playing the super old stuff. Unfortunately, the LPU loves those songs, but the average concert goer is coming to hear the more popular tracks.
darknessovrme says to (13:09): E post your questions
mshinoda says to (13:09): Collabos - I just did a song for Cypress Hill that might end up on their new album, coming soon. I sang on it and did the beat (no rapping!)
EvoOba says to (13:09): Hey Mike! What?s up? Are you planning to do another art show in 2010 or any time soon? You mentioned something about taking your art outside LA. I?m dying to see new pieces from your art. Btw what do you want for xmas? Greetings from Greece, Eva
mshinoda says to (13:10): I'd love to do an art show outside LA. I'm going to try, but the album comes first right now...
Erock says to (13:10): Have you guys ever attempted to recapture the vibes emotions and overall impact some of your great songs have had, and redirect that on newer material? For example the intensity you and chester have on LFY or F.09, or the emotions behind LTGYA...
mshinoda says to (13:10): Xmas: I want a new blog design.
darknessovrme says to (13:11): F post your questoins
darknessovrme says to (13:11): questions*
darknessovrme says to (13:11): letter F only folks
mshinoda says to (13:12): We always try to capture that emotion on every recording. If you're not hearing that, I suppose we're not doing a good job.
mshinoda says to (13:12): LOL
frgt10_LP says to (13:12): Hi Mike!12 songs will be on the new lp's album or more?
Filofax says to (13:12): Yo Mike hope your well, Will there be another remix album like Reanimation? As I really enjoy listening to that album!!
mshinoda says to (13:13): SIDE NOTE: For people interested in my art / prints...we semi-secretly just put up a batch of my signed, numbered prints at SURU-LA. Spread the word.
darknessovrme says to (13:13): G post your questions
mshinoda says to (13:13): # of songs on new LP album: I think there might be fewer songs, and they might be longer songs. Not sure though
GraDoN says to (13:14): Hi Mike greetings from South Africa, Minutes to Midnight was the first Linkin Park album containing explicit lyrics just want to know if you guys are continuing that and what topics are you exploring lyrically now? Thanks a lot for your awesome music!
Gabo says to linkingabo (13:14): hey MIKE! will we get any more songs for download download like ''LOCKJAW'' or something special for LPU?
darknessovrme says to (13:14): post your question 1 time folks
darknessovrme says to (13:14): do not spam it
mshinoda says to (13:14): Remixes: no plans right now. Again, I hope to re-work some of our older stuff next time we go out on tour (for the live show).
mshinoda says to (13:15): Explicit - yep, probably some cursing. Topics: anything that comes up!
pegasusrocks says to (13:15): Reminder - do not post out of turn. If you missed your turn, be patient and hope that we get back to it...no promises of course. But your question will NOT be posted out of turn.
Greg_B says to (13:15): Hi mike, thanks for taking the time to stop by the LPU. I was wondering, are you guys working with Rick Ruben on the new album or a different producer?
mshinoda says to (13:16): Downloads / new music. Maybe the iPhone game will contain something you might be interested in...
darknessovrme says to (13:16): H post your questions
mshinoda says to (13:16): We haven't officially confirmed that Rick will be producing the next album :)
Hahninator says to (13:16): Hey Mike! Rob said in the last chat that you guys plan to make older live recordings available to us. Can you give us more details about them and how far they reach back? Thanks! -LPLive.net
hybrid_lp says to (13:17): Hello Mike, I would like to ask about "Across The Line" ( - which is really awesome, by the way :)) - we can hear Chester's and someone else's voice in it. So who is it ? ... It doesn't sound like You... Am I wrong? ;) Greets! Monica from Poland
mshinoda says to (13:17): I think we are going to be make EVERY SHOW in the last tour available. That's over 100 shows.
mshinoda says to (13:17): = over 100 albums
mshinoda says to (13:17): there might be some fan packages, etc. for the superfans who are interested.
Holden says to 0000 (13:18): Hey Mike! My question is: Will LP ever do another LPUnderground tour again? Thanks for chatting with us!
mshinoda says to (13:18): I think Across The Line is all Chester's voice, although I often do the rough vocal as we're writing it, and sometimes we leave some of my vocals in. Not sure on that one.
mshinoda says to (13:18): Definitely not anyone but me and Chester, tho
darknessovrme says to (13:19): I and J post
mshinoda says to (13:19): LPU Tour: haven't discussed it yet. We'll definitely talk about it before the next tour.
jopeace says to (13:20): Hey Mike! Aside from the mass amounts of balloons, what else do you guys do in the recording studio to help get your creative juices flowing? Thanks, from Leetah in Victoria, Canada! :)
mshinoda says to (13:20): We're trying to do things for LPU that are far-reaching, since the community is world wide. A show for 150 people is awesome, but there are so many people who will never get to see that, it kinda sucks for everyone else.
mshinoda says to (13:20): But it's great for the 150!
JanekZech says to mshinoda (13:20): Hey Mike, what about playing the whole Hybrid Theory album live next year to celebrate its 10th anniversary? (lplive.net)
mshinoda says to (13:21): Creative stimulation: we've been in the studio a lot more, and things can get pretty free-form. Just jamming on each others' instruments, freestyling songs, recording everything.
ISA says to (13:22): Hey Mike! Is there any topic you would never write a song about? and still going with the Da-Na method when trying to get new lyrics with Chester? Greetings from Barcelona.
mshinoda says to (13:22): It can be a lot of junk, but we listen for little gems that might work their way into one of the songs. Besides, it's great practice.
mshinoda says to (13:22): Playing HT live: I want to wait until the 25th anniversary LOL
darknessovrme says to (13:23): K post
pegasusrocks says to (13:23): LOL
darknessovrme says to (13:23): dont post out of turn folks
KATHYxx says to (13:23): Hey Mike, When Soundscan said that Hybrid Theory is the 7th top selling album of the decade, does it still knock you off your feet or have you found your bearings on that kind of news yet? thanks for visiting.
mshinoda says to (13:24): We've been moving from singing da-na-na on tracks to a new approach: singing fake words. Just letting your mouth go and seeing what nonsense comes out. It's pretty surprising.
mshinoda says to (13:24): 7th? What's 1-6? ha
kay86 says to XaGiCo (13:24): Hey Mike! Its Kay from Linkin Park Spain. By releasing the audio of EVERY SHOW from last tour, do you mean you are going to release even the audio from the festival gigs that havent been released as DSP?? Thanks!!
pegasusrocks says to (13:24): :S
mshinoda says to (13:24): Not being ***y, BTW. I just never realized that (as you said).
darknessovrme says to (13:25): /me snickers at the sensor
mshinoda says to (13:25): not being arrogant, rather
darknessovrme says to (13:25): L post
linkinparc says to mshinoda (13:26): Hola mike! I wanted to ask you if you plan to design LPU10 because we fans want your personal, artistic touch on it! xo Ana of the Phoenix Farrell Fansite aka. I heart PHX shirt owner.
pegasusrocks says to (13:26): Reminder - Do not post out of turn. Use a color we can read, avoid dark ones and green since Mike is using it.
mshinoda says to (13:26): Live shows / festivals - If we didn't release audio for a show, it's almost always because the venue or show promoter made it difficult or impossible to do so.
lilyjulia says to (13:27): hey mike, we're longing for more lptv-episodes, especially from the summer09tour, can we expect some more to come? thanks for chatting with us! :)
mshinoda says to (13:27): They may have prohibited it, or they may have demanded so much money for the rights that we were not able to make it an option (barring charging you guys $100 or $1000 for a CD, ha)
mshinoda says to (13:28): LPU10 design? I think I'll stick to designing mikeshinoda.com. I DO have a set of iGoogle headers coming out, BTW. In case some of you use iGoogle.
LmariaP says to (13:28): Hello Mike!Thank you so much for being here tonight answering our questions!Well, how does it feel when critics strongly disapprove of your work into which you?ve spent a lot of effort and time? Can it make you stronger or the opposite? greetings from Greece
mshinoda says to (13:28): LPTV will start revving up in early 2010.
darknessovrme says to (13:28): M post
mshinoda says to (13:29): Critics will be critical. We can't sweat what we can't change.
pegasusrocks says to (13:29): M's only post. Post in a color we can read. Do not use green please! Thanks.
mattchandrews says to darknessovrme (13:29): Hey Mike! Do you think you could release some songs from "Xero" that havn't been heard yet, or some info about any Xero songs that no one knows about? What do you think about people downloading your albums? - From Matt Andrews in Toronto
mshinoda says to (13:29): Rolling Stone gave HT 2.5 stars our of 5, I think. Then they practically apologized for the review many years later, which was exceptionally nice. Most magazines aren't that way.
pegasusrocks says to (13:30): wow
MikeSnatkin says to (13:30): Hey Mike, can you tell us something about the specials coming by each LP member at lpu soon? greets from germany! thanks - LPLive.net
darknessovrme says to (13:30): harsh
mshinoda says to (13:30): Xero songs - I don't have any for you to hear. I do have some other older demos though...maybe someday :)
Margherita says to (13:31): Hi I'm Margherita from Italy... What about your last nomination for the GRAMMY? God bless you
mshinoda says to (13:31): My stance on downloading is a little too complicated for here. It's on mikeshinoda.com though.
pegasusrocks says to (13:31): Please do NOT post out of turn.
MalFUNct10N says to (13:31): Hello Mike, great job with LPU9! I love it! I read your blog post the other day, which was about ProTools8 bugs and I wanted to ask you if this issue is going to slow down the new album process! Thanks a lot Mike, greetings from Greece!
darknessovrme says to (13:32): N post
Nameless says (13:32):
Hey Mike! Mark Fiore has been using some unreleased 2005 VMA score clips in recent LPTV episodes - do you think those have a chance of being released in full sometime? Greets from -LPLive.net- and -LinkinPark.it- :)
mshinoda says to (13:33): found it
mshinoda says to (13:33): http://www.mikeshinoda.com/blog/Linkin_Park_Photos-Responses_To_Fans-Music_Business/responses_to_comments-1
mshinoda says to (13:34): Digidesign just called our engineer back. They weren't able to fix the problem because it might have something to do with 3rd party plug ins. We're still working on it.
darknessovrme says to (13:34): give him a sec i want to make sure he got all those questions before i pass more
NoFace says to (13:35): Mike, as an inspiration to many young artists, what would you say to people who are struggling with their creativity force, artistic integrity and kicking-in real in order to be true with their art? What would you say if I ask you ?I need a sign.?
mshinoda says to (13:35): MikeSnatkin: I don't have any insight into the "LPU specials" coming up
mshinoda says to (13:36): GRAMMY nomination for What Ive Done live was cool. We're in the same catergory with album tracks by those other artists. I guess that says something good about our live show!
darknessovrme says to (13:36): O post
mshinoda says to (13:36): I think those VMA songs are online, no? I can put them up on ms.com, I suppose.
OddTree says to (13:38): Hi Mike :D Where did some of Linkin Park?s more... random song names come from? (Figure.09, Sold My Soul to Yo Mama, Papercut, etc.) Were they just working titles you guys decided to keep? -Aud ?
mshinoda says to (13:38): NoFace: a few things I'd recommend: study your craft, learn from your favorite artists = don't re-invent the wheel. Then, define your own thing, and stick to it.
pegasusrocks says to (13:38): Please do not post out of turn.
mshinoda says to (13:38): Yes, they were working titles!
mshinoda says to (13:39): Faint, too.
Orangefish says to (13:39): Hey Mike! Have you planned something new for the live shows? Like Pyro-Technic or a light show? Maybe you guys do more crowd-surfing or something like that? Please let us know! Thanks for beeing here today, Germany loves you, Denise:)
darknessovrme says to (13:39): P post
mshinoda says to (13:39): It's too early to tell what the live show will be like, but I imagine it will involve playing songs.
PinkWater3 says to (13:40): Hi Mike. All the instrumentals that you've released over the years are fantastic and had a great response. Have you ever thought of putting up an all instrumental album?
PinkSoldier9 says to (13:40): Hey Mike, i was amazed after listening to Fear on the LPU9 cd so i was wondering, was it easy or difficult to change that song's style completely? is there any chance u guys could record that version as a Bside on the next record? Greetings from Peru!
mshinoda says to (13:41): I like instrumentals sometimes. We'll see. There could also be instrumental parts within new songs...not sure yet!
darknessovrme says to (13:41): Q and R post
darknessovrme says to (13:42): do not spam your question
darknessovrme says to (13:42): only post it 1 time
pegasusrocks says to (13:42): Q and R onlly post. Do not post more than once. Thx.
mshinoda says to (13:42): The evolution from "fear" to LOATR was a pretty standard evolution, for us. Most of our songs start as one thing, then change as we work on them, until they sound right. Not that Fear is bad, it's just undercooked (to me).
red_soldier says to mshinoda (13:42): Hi Mike! Firstly i want to thank you for coming to Turkey this year(: here is my question..
How do the new lyrics sound? did you determine any concept for the songs or you just write what you currently feel?
mshinoda says to (13:43): But there's a beauty in that undercooked-ness that we wanted you guys to hear. Nobody ever gets to hear it but us, usually
mshinoda says to (13:43): usually.
mshinoda says to (13:43): The new lyrics are all about Phoenix playing Golf.
pegasusrocks says to (13:43): LOL
darknessovrme says to (13:44): lmmfao
darknessovrme says to (13:44): S post
mshinoda says to (13:44): I have to go, soon. A few more ?s
pegasusrocks says to (13:44): OK guys last few questions, make them good :)
darknessovrme says to (13:44): wow my screen just jumped like crazy

darknessovrme says to (13:45): seriously calm down and dont post out of turn
darknessovrme says to (13:45): S only
pegasusrocks says to (13:46): Only S post.
pegasusrocks says to (13:46): PLEASE, pretty please - do not post out of turn.
sckofelng says to (13:46): Hey Mike! I totally love Across The Line, pity that it didnt make the album. Can you tell us who came up with the lyrics and instrumentals for it? Greets from LPLive.net
snoopy23 says to (13:46): Hi Mike, Are there any songs/music that you and the guys have made in the past that were not used that keep coming back to be worked on again? Thanks Mike for chatting with us! :$ Lauren aka: Cherry red
SergSlim says to (13:47): Hey Mike, we have the 5 MTV.com VMA score songs released in '05. But I think there are few unreleased ones. How about all of them together in lossless format on ms.com? LPLive.net
pegasusrocks says to (13:47): Do NOT post out of turn.
mshinoda says to (13:47): Across the Line was written by all of us. The majority of the music came from two separate demos I did at my house. Chester and I did the vocals and lyrics.
pegasusrocks says to (13:47): We are on S, only.
mshinoda says to (13:48): There's one song we've resurrected that I sing on, that's back in the mix. You guys haven't heard about it. I don't know if it's going to be good or not. Time will tell!
pegasusrocks says to (13:49): Please stop posting your questions.
mshinoda says to (13:49): MTV songs - we'll see.
darknessovrme says to (13:49): want more or no?
darknessovrme says to (13:49): do not post out of turn ppl
darknessovrme says to (13:49): flooding the screen does not give you higher chances
mshinoda says to (13:49): I'm gonna go. Here are a couple more tasty tidbits for you guys
pegasusrocks says to (13:50): Please stop posting questions.
darknessovrme says to (13:50): thanks for joining us today Mike
mshinoda says to (13:50): You're going to have to re-sign up for the new linkinpark.com because we're changing over the system, but you're going to be able to keep your name and password.
darknessovrme says to (13:50): stop spamming folks
mshinoda says to (13:51): The new linkinpark.com (coming asap) is going to be "themed" for the new Linkin Park game. LPU wlll be the 1st to preview it and beta test it!

I don't rant often, but this particular note deserves it. I'll write this while the studio computer is restarting. Here's the deal. I hope you guys at Digidesign are reading.
ProTools is friggin crashing...every time I zoom in too far.
What?
I can't zoom?
The engineers and I have tried to hunt down the root of this problem (online) for a month. We haven't come up with anything. We then called the Digidesign artist relations team, who have told us 3 times "OK, give us a time when you guys will be in the studio, and we'll call you." They flake. Every time. Ethan (our engineer) asked if we could call them. "No, because we need a tech on the phone…" And so on. To be fair, I know these guys are busy actually fixing this bug…but this is industry-standard software. Your average ProTools rig is about $30-50,000.00. I want to be able to, um…zoom. I hear that Logic and Cubase both zoom in. Even Garage Band zooms in, and that came free with my computer. And after I did lockjaw and helped them promote PT8…and the NAMM appearance…and tell everyone how awesome their stuff is, maybe they could at least give a fella a call back.
One other thing I wanted to mention is that we're in the process of re-designing linkinpark.com and mikeshinoda.com. I think ms.com will be done first, because it's a less complicated site. For those of you who have a password and LPN account, we're going to be asking everyone to create a new account. I think it might be an opt-in system, so you can keep your existing name and password if you like. The good news is: we're working on making the sign-in system a lot easier, so you don't have to keep clicking on stupid stuff (I know this was annoying to some of you). There will be some other minor changes that might be useful for you; we'll talk about those later.
Linkin Park has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for “What I’ve Done” from Road To Revolution: Live At Milton Keynes! The Grammy Awards will take place on January 31 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Mereka berbicara tentang Dead By Sunrise.
College Times: How did you hook up with the guys from Julien-K for Dead by Sunrise?
Chester Bennington: Well, I've been friends with Ryan [Shuck] and Amir [Derakh] for about 10 years or so, maybe longer. Ryan was the best man at my wedding and we're close. We're really close friends. So when I had to pick somebody to work with on these songs, I thought 'well, I'm going to call Ryan and Amir.' They actually started Julien-K and in doing so, Brandon [Belsky] has been working with those guys as an assistant-slash-engineering assistant ... and they couldn't recruit him into their band. So we kind of turned him from a boy into a rock star. Fu [Anthony Valcic] is a producer and engineer from Canada that was recruited to work for a company we had started. He has worked with Ryan and Amir and in doing that I became friends with him. I became friends with Alias when the Hybrid [Linkin Park] tour started. We had just started touring for Linkin Park ... and I met him kind of haphazardly back then. It turns out that he is way fucking better at drums than he is [at synth]. Somehow, through the grapevine, he started blending into Ryan and Amir's camp and we've been great friends ever since.
College Times: Dead By Sunrise has a more grungy feel than Linkin Park, and at times it sounds a little punk. I don't really hear that with Linkin Park, Julien-K or Orgy. Is that a sound you wanted to achieve or was it just something you fell into?
Chester Bennington: These are the songs I write. You know, I've always been into those genres of music my whole life. I primarily listen to punk music, grunge music or pop-alternative stuff like Depeche Mode and The Cure. Those are my things. So, when you grow up listening to the blues you're probably going to write bluesy songs. That's the same case for me here.
College Times: How is the songwriting experience different with Dead By Sunrise than it is with Linkin Park?
Chester Bennington: Really, the process of it is very similar. The main difference is that these are my songs and I'm involved in every aspect of making this record.
College Times: The band is playing upcoming dates, but are there any plans in the works for a full-on tour?
Chester Bennington: We're working on it.
College Times: Oh really? Will it be nationwide?
Chester Bennington: I would like to think so. I mean, I'm working on a new Linkin Park record, so it's not like I can be like 'oh, I have eight months to 12 months to tour this record.' It's like, 'okay, I'm making a record for Linkin Park.' I need to balance playing shows for Dead By Sunrise as well as being in the studio with Linkin Park, which is the priority. It's difficult for me to say that because they're both really important to me. We're figuring that out. It's the biggest hurdle facing us right now, to manage to build Dead by Sunrise around Linkin Park.
College Times: Was Dead By Sunrise's name originally "Snow White Tan." Why did you change it?
Chester Bennington: I loved the name. When we started working on the songs, I was really writing more ... of these mid-tempo, melodically driven songs like "Too Late" or "Walking in Circles," "In the Darkness," "Give Me Your Name," so we really had to pump up the rock a little bit. Otherwise I would have literally an album full of songs in that vein, which wouldn't be bad, but I don't want people to kill themselves to this record. I want people to play the album and rock out and have an emotionally dynamic experience. So, you know, um ... I totally just lost train of thought. I got a little distracted. My super hot wife just walked in front of me and I completely lost it.
College Times: Fair enough; why did you change the name?
Chester Bennington: Oh, yeah. So, at the time we weren't going out into the day and doing a lot of work until 4 o'clock in the morning, so it fit. Given that kind of dark nature to a lot of the songs and given that it just summarizes the overall musical feel of the band, it felt like, as time went on it got a little darker and heavier and meaner, so to speak. The name felt a little [less fitting], so we decided to change it to something that fit.

Posted by rockermeg - Ahh the tension is unbearable! It sounds like you're making great progress, and at quite a good pace. 60 is well below the number you had for M2M. Is that a good or bad thing?
M: We wrote roughly 150 demos for MTM because we were at a point where we were redefining how we approached writing a song. We were breaking down rigid, preconceived ideas about how our band "should" sound…we had to experiment with a lot of crazy stuff in order to figure out what the album should sound like. At the end of the process, we all felt like we had pushed outside our comfort zones quite a bit, and we were happy about the new frontiers the process had opened up. I think we're now at a place where there are far fewer boundaries or barriers, and the perspective of the past few years has given us an intense creative momentum, so fewer demos are getting the job done. Quality, not quantity; I don't think we'll need to write that many demos to know that the album is ready.
Posted by spraypaintNinkpens - I guess we really shouldn't expect an album in 2010 because you take forever to release a 12 track cd. I wish you'd release a cd faster than 3-4 years because everyone is going to inevitably start to make people lose interest in the band. Lockjaw was made in a day and it's a stellar track.
M: Thanks for the nice comment about "Lockjaw." I am writing these updates to assure you that what we've said about putting music out more quickly is our intention, 100%. It is my firm belief that the album will be out in 2010. As for the "3-4 year" comment: we've been saying that for about 6 months. In that short time, here is the new music that has come from our camp: "New Divide," "Lockjaw," my "Gold Guns Girls" remix, my Julien-K remix, my track for Apathy called "Shoot First," and an entire DBS album. Some are more mainstream things, others are meant for various levels of underground fans. We already have other related ideas ("Across The Line" on the LPU9 CD for example) on deck before the next album comes. Then, after the next album, we hope to continue to create and release music faster than we have in the past (3-4 years between studio albums is obviously a long time). The bottom line is: we're trying to be in the studio more than ever, making great stuff that is Linkin Park quality. We LIVE in the studio now.
Posted by Rotten - Couldn't you give us more info on your upcoming album please? Like how it's gonna sound, mainly hip hop or rock? Is it gonna be experimental as MTM was? Anyway, i'm confident about the quality since you never disappointed us but i'm afraid you'll be producing an album just because you have to…
M: I've been rapping a bit more, Joe has been a little more present, and together we're also doing a lot with the beats. Again, you never know what can happen: we can make 50 songs with rapping, and if the 10 that don't have rapping get picked by the band for the album, then any comment I may have made about rapping is null and void! But we have never produced an album because "we had to," it's all about where the band is at creatively, at the time. Hybrid Theory and Meteora were a time of defining a sound, MTM was a time of destroying that and branching out in many directions. This new album, so far, is a redefinition.
Posted by pepper - THANK YOU for the album update Mike!! We kept tweeting Phi for an update, but no go. I guess you are the better man =P (haha as if there was any doubt) Lol I'm so excited to hear about the long songs and that you guys are going through your usual thorough process for selecting the songs for the album. Stay focused and keep rocking on my brothers, I'm so stoked for this album and what 2010 holds for LP!
M: Yes Pepper, I am your friend and Phoenix is ignoring you. He is evil, I am good. Thanks for the good words…we'll do our best to make this album great, for you and everyone who is down with the band. Sumber
